Imagine a room of 500 college students jammin’ to the beat of African drums and excited about the rhythms of their faith journey! That’s what I got to experience in an incredible weekend in Tacoma at the end of May. Designing and leading worship with these amazing young people was so inspiring. Not only did they worship with vitality and dedication, they dove deep into difficult discussions through Holy Conferencing and did it with respect for diverse beliefs and truly “open hearts, open minds and open doors.” I thank God for these leaders who will be the ones to shape our church in the coming years.

Highlights:
prayers for those affected by campus violence through song and images /
getting to body-surf over the crowd at the end of my sermon (my arms are still sore!) /
prayer stations in the candlelit chapel basement /
an overwhelming repsonse to the call for students to write prayers for the future of the church /
seeing people walk/pray/meditate among the beautiful trees in the grove /
the awesome planning team!

Read on to see a Call to Worship created from the planning team’s brainstorm around the theme “Break Forth!”

The Dialogue Begins
[Done by two voices with drums building a rhythm underneath]

Break forth!
Break out!
Break-fast!
Break dance!
Break it up!
Break into!
Breaker-Breaker!
Break-up!
Break bread!
Take a break!
Emergency brake!
Whoa!!!

What are we talking about?

Breaking is risky business…
Broken foot
Broken lives
Broken hearts
Broken ties

What are we talking about?

Breaking patterns!
Seeing with new eyes…
Hearing with new ears…
Loving with new hearts…
Breaking the molds that keep us from moving on, moving out…
Breaking through!
Breaking forth!
