I’m sitting in my hotel room just next to the entrance to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. No, I’ve haven’t been to the theme park but I had the privilege of teaching people who are on quite a ride! The School of Congregational Development that was held in Orlando this year had me come and do workshops on “music for new church starts.” As I listened to what some of these participants are dreaming of doing (or have already begun doing), I am in awe of the courage and tenacity these folks have to move “outside the box” in order to enliven the church and offer something beyond “business as usual” for those who don’t have a church connection. My hope is that they found something helpful in my workshop for discerning what worship beyond “business as usual” looks like. My concept of “layering” all the senses for worship may feel like it will take the effort of a “Universal Studios” production, but the extra time and teamwork will totally pay off in worship that engages people, is deeply meaningful, and makes the Story unforgettable! I promised the “enhanced” notes… so here they are. A special shout out to Chip who played piano for my second workshop. He was there working for GNTV (the AV company) and I nabbed him when I heard him “noodling around” (more like some of the most exciting jazz improv I’ve heard in a young person EVER). Thanks!
