For the second year, I was invited to design and lead worship at an event called “SoulFeast” at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina sponsored by Upper Room Ministries. Five hundred people gathered to worship, be inspired by speakers and (copius!) workshops and engage in Sabbath rest each day. I really like this event because people come EXPECTING to deepen their spiritual pilgrimages and they are so open to going deep. Ahhhh… Frankly, after so many conferences in the last few months, I needed a bit of sabbath and going deep. Well, I didn’t get Sabbath rest (with morning and evening worship, who has time to rest?) but I did get to go deep and there was rejuvenation in that. I think the most important thing I was reminded of was the importance of spiritual disciplines and I’ve recommitted to not only devotional reading but also spending time in silence just being, just listening. What a gift. Some of my favorite moments were: Jammin’ as we sang “I Will Take the Cup of Freedom” during our Great Thanksgiving prayer; Justin’s wailing lament on electric guitar before we sang “I Want Jesus to Walk With Me”; youth throwing boxes around the chancel as they broke down the walls that divide us; and thunder outside the auditorium as we were sitting in the dark telling the story of middle-of-the-night early Christian baptism (Easter Vigil) before we began to walk the aisles offering water to each other. Check out the SoulFeast 2008 photo album in the right column to see/hear more about this conference.
